The final nail in the 2020 box office may have been the move of No Time to Die into 2021 leaving only two big films yet to move, Dune and Wonder Woman 1984, but likely to do so, especially after Regal Cinemas’ parent company decided to shutter their theaters nationwide and in the United Kingdom and Ireland. This move signals a worsening economic depression than expected. Still, there are some wide release films available for moviegoers including this week’s latest attempt to keep Robert De Niro working in the least glamorous projects possible. In War with Grandpa, De Niro moves into his child’s home where he is forced to share his grandson’s room. His grandson doesn’t like it and a war begins between them. It’s the kind of wasted fluff that he’s been making in between celebrated work, but at this juncture he doesn’t have to. It’s the only wide release this weekend, but even those prospects aren’t great all things considered.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks like some of the worst garbage Robert De Niro has ever done and that’s actually saying something.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Silly, but not unpleasant looking comedy from the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks incredibly lame and unfunny, and a bad family comedy just feels like the wrong thing right now.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer is limitedly funny, but the film does seem to have a decent amount of promise.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Long-time relationship drama should be a pleasant time killer.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Early reviewers like it, but the trailer held few laughs and these did not seem to be people I wanted to spend much time with.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The overacting in the trailer is distracting, especially from talented young actors Elle Fanning and Timothรฉe Chalamet.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This is the long delayed U.S. release of Woody Allen’s film that has gotten decent reviews when released outside of the U.S.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Even mediocre Woody Allen is fun, and the reviewers definitely find it mediocre. I enjoyed the trailer but am not sure there will be enough to merit interest in the film itself.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There isn’t a lot to the trailer that makes it feel important, but there are kernels of interest there.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Coming of age drama about a Filipina country music star from Texas is certainly something different.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The story of a young Filipina trying to find a start in country music actually could be an appealing story line. It looks promising.
