This weekend, we have a battle of two types of audiences. The first film is likely to draw a lot of fans of Frank Herbert’s seminal sci-fi classic. The other film is likely to appeal to families who haven’t had as much to see at theaters recently. Ultimately, the expansive epic is more likely to top the box office than anything else, so Dune likely wins the weekend.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The book is long and detailed, but engaging, and the movie comes from one of the best directors working today, so my anticipation is high.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Previously filmed sci-fi classic looks like it may have been done right this time.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It has been decades since I read the novel, but am looking forward to this. Word of mouth is good and it probably will be the most nominated film of the year, and could win most of the technical awards if not even a couple major ones.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer is amusing, so I’m curious to see how this one turned out.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Engaging kids’ film could be a dark horse Oscar nominee for Best Animated Film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Actually the trailer makes it look pretty fun, definitely better than the commercials for it I have seen. Probably not amazing or unique, but fun.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Normally, Wes Anderson has a lot going for him, but this film doesn’t look like it will be among his best.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Wes Anderson’s latest looks derivative of his past work which could be too much of a good thing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks cute and meticulously laid out, like all Wes Anderson films, but this feels like a minor one from him.
