Looking at the Weekend: Nov. 26-28, 2021

After a less than spectacular opening for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the Thanksgiving holiday will see a handful of new wide releases, but only one of them will likely top the box office, Disney’s Encanto. Although the studio has struggled to turn its animated features into blockbusters in the last year, the combination of a holiday centered around family and the likely lackluster premiers of the two other films releasing wide this week, suggests Encanto should easily top the box office even if it isn’t a smash hit.

Patrick (PP): Disney’s latest contender for the Best Animated Feature Oscar should be a box-office hit. Thomas LaTourette (TL): Disney animated films are almost always worth seeing, and this should be en enjoyable if perhaps minor one.

Patrick (PP): A major Oscar contender in several categories, this could be either a huge hit or major flop. 	Wesley Lovell (WL): The play is said to be great, so we’ll see how well it translates to the big screen. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Richard Jenkins is being hyped for major awards but the trailer leaves me cold. Thomas LaTourette (TL): On Broadway, this had felt like second rate Edward Albee, though Jayne Houdyshell was magnificent in the part that she is recreating for the film. It might actually work better as a film.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): I love Paul Thomas Anderson, but I haven’t gotten into any of his films in quite some time, so who knows, maybe this will right his ship. Peter J. Patrick (PP): P.T. Anderson has made some of the best films of the last quarter century, but I can’t tell if this is one of them. Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer does not excite me, but the reviews are very good and it will probably get a number of Oscar nominations.
