There will be no competition for first place. Frozen II will annihilate all rivals. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood could be a minor hit, but Frozen II will have a massive debut and top the chart for the next three weekends until Jumanji: the Next Level unseats it on the weekend of December 13.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Marielle Heller’s prior film was terrific and this is said to be rather vital, so I’m interested in seeing it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This film is being sold on Tom Hanks’ portrayal of Mr. Rogers, yet he is being campaigned for an Oscar in support which may strike some as rampant category fraud but won’t hurt the film’s box office potential.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): After the director’s last film, I am intrigued to see what she does with Mr. Rogers. And Tom Hanks looks incredibly well cast.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I wasn’t as enamored with the original film as some, so I’m not as excited about seeing this as those same folk are.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The sequel to the most successful Disney film of the decade is a guaranteed box office juggernaut.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not certain that needed a sequel, but Disney does know how to put on a show so it should be decent if not very good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It has potential, but the trailer doesn’t give one hope.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Under-the-radar sci-fi release with a trailer that dropped just 10 days ago doesn’t seem to have much of a future.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This science fiction drama has an interesting starting point, with astronauts on a space station witnessing earth’s destruction, but the trailer does little to sell it beyond that.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like a more expansive, yet a bargain basement-quality version of Short Term 12.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Directed by Terrence Malick’s editor, this film was a festival hit under its original title of Friday’s Child, could be a bit of a sleeper.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The story of an 18-year-old being kicked out of foster care due to his age might prove good, though it looks more depressing than good in the trailer.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer does absolutely nothing to make the film look appealing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): British thriller looks fairly routine.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The body count will be high in this film and the trailer does little to make me want to see this violent film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Todd Haynes is one of the greatest filmmakers working today and while this doesn’t look to be in his wheelhouse, Mark Ruffalo is reason enough to see the film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Legal drama looks like another critical hit for Todd Haynes but may be one too many in the genre this year to make it to the major awards.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Films about investigating the crookedness of big corporations can be good, but this one is flying so far under the radar that I am not certain about it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The film looks to be rather sweet and may be a fascinating look at cultural issues for teenagers, but it could also be rather cloying.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Coming-of-age of a Muslim teenager should get some awards recognition outside the major ones.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I imagine this will be a slight coming of age story about a group we know little about. I worry that it will be just too slight to hold interest.
