Four new films go up against the second weekend of Pixar’s Onward and it’s likely that one of them should be able to topple a film that had a rather unimpressive opening for a Pixar feature. Bloodshot is a sci-fi actioner starring Vin Diesel, which has some solid potential. The Hunt was held back from 2019 release due to a mass shooting and has only now been given the go ahead and could be an interesting test case of negative buzz bolstering a film’s performance. I Still Believe is the latest Christian-themed film to try and buck the recent pattern of poor performances. My Spy was also delayed from 2019, but not for a reason that makes sense, but because it probably wasn’t strong enough to open its previous window. Ultimately, the first two films on this list have the best potential of victory with Diesel’s film having the better shot due to his sizable box office bona fides. (Editor’s Note: This article’s deadline was prior to the announcement that My Spy would be pushed back again. I’ve removed that entry below, but left the references above.)

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This kind of action thriller isn’t exactly in my wheelhouse.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This looks like a clichรฉd sci-fi drama.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This also feels like a film that has been done many times before, and probably better.

Wesley Lovell (WL): I have been fascinated by this film since its first trailer last year. I have some qualms about it, but am generally interested in it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This looks like a low rent horror film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): After getting pushed back, this is finally getting a release, though it looks sort of distasteful.

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like more religious claptrap to me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like something you might come across on the Hallmark Channel.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Oh dear, I thought we were done with Christian singing films, but I guess not.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This semi-autobiographical film looks uninteresting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks very annoying.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A couple reviews made me wonder about the film, but the people in the trailer seem pretty unlikable, so I doubt I will choose to spend time with them.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The film looks like it could be most interesting, but it also looks like it could be quite awful.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a high octane prison drama.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This generic story of a felon being sent back to prison to spy looks to have a good cast, but too familiar a story to hold my interest.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A forgettable film with a forgettable trailer.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Unconventional drama looks like it has merit.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A bipolar student and a stripper with a heart of gold do not make either the most believable pair.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m fascinated by what the film has to say about the modern climate surrounding abortion.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Slice-of-life drama may be something worth catching.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The early reviews are very good and the movie tackles some important topics, but I just am not sure if I want to see it. Still the trailer does have a sense of dread that feels very realistic.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A solid cast doesn’t make the so-so premise sound interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A film about life’s regrets doesn’t look especially involving.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This has the possibility of being an interesting film, but I am not sure that it will succeed.
