The first of this year’s potential Best Picture Oscar contenders releases to cinemas. In the Heights is adapted from the Tony-winning Broadway musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda and will be one of two New York-set musicals this year, both of which will compete at the Oscars. This film has one other wide release to compete against, and Peter Rabbit 2 could be formidable, but little is more exciting than a big screen musical extravaganza.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I was heavily anticipating this last year before it was pulled and my interest has not changed much.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like more of a Globes than an Oscar thing but Olga Merediz could be a Supporting Actress nominee for both.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I enjoyed it on stage, but was uncertain from the trailers. However, the reviews are very good and it looks to be a hit. I am unsure about its Oscar possibilities as it could earn many or none.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first film looked incredibly stupid and this looks like more of the same.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Mixed animation and live action film should keep kids and their parents entertained.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I did not see the original and this does not appeal too much, though would be diverting for families with kids.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A historical film about the Mighty Mites. I have zero interest.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another inspirational kids and sports drama with a decent cast – worth a look but probably not an Oscar candidate.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It boasts a surprisingly good cast, but looks to be as hokey as any film about an underdog sports team rising to the top.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There’s an inventiveness to the concept that isn’t well conveyed in the trailer.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Psychological horror film seems a step up from the usual grind.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews make it sound like a better than average horror film, but the trailer does a disservice to it as it does not really set up the premise of what could be an original story.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Another film about small town struggles doesn’t seem that interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Off-beat drama about a college girl with an unusually dangerous job should find its audience.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A film about a young person trying to rise above their circumstances has been done many times. Supposedly the lead actress carries the film well, but the trailer does little to entice one to see the film.

Wesley Lovell (WL): I never saw the original, but the sequel doesn’t look like it’s worth catching up with.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Idiotic sequel to a dumb original – no thank you.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I do not even remember hearing about the original, but this looks so bad that I have no desire to see either of the films.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While the concept is new, the heist elements are not and the trailer doesn’t quite sell it beyond that.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Appears to be another headache-inducing mess from producer-director Renny Harlin.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Pierce Brosnan looks to be a good fit for the lead, but the heist film does not look to be that original.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): With such a wonderful array of actors, it might be worth catching in spite of its inherent predictability.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like one of the funnier old lady comedies, which could please geriatric audiences.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Perhaps the great cast can lift this above the typical nursing home-set comedy, but I am dubious about that. The trailer looks pretty pedestrian.
