With both Snake Eyes and Old putting up unexceptional numbers, one of this week’s three new wide releases could come out on top. Stillwater doesn’t seem like the kind of film to have a strong opening weekend, but it might have quite a bit of longevity. The Green Knight doesn’t have anyone that broad audiences would recognize or be intrigued in seeing. That leaves Jungle Cruise, which not only has popular Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson, but also has the Disney stamp on it, being as it’s an adaptation of one of their popular attractions. It seems like a slam dunk for the Mouse House.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’ve been intrigued by the potential for this film since it was first previewed last year. The late-July release is unusual and doesn’t give me much hope.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Stylish take on the Arthurian legend is at least something new.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): An interesting but somewhat dense trailer makes me wonder about it. The reviews are good, but the word “enigmatic” was used often, which may not be a good sign.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): In spite of my better judgement, this film might be more interesting than it has looked in any of the trailers.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Tongue-in-cheek Disney adventure with two popular stars could be a summertime hit.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer looks more stupid than entertaining, but Disney has pulled off this type of film before, so it may be better than it looks.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Tom McCarthy has made some solid films, so it’s at least worth considering, especially after the positive festival reviews.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Tom McCarthy’s films are always worth a look and Matt Damon’s 5-minute standing ovation at Cannes should be enough to compel serious filmgoers to seek it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reception at Cannes was ecstatic, but the early reviews are quite mixed. The trailer does not do enough to totally grab me, which may be a problem getting a large crowd.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks fairly generic.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Opioid drama seems to be a mix of the new and the familiar with Lili Taylor and Tess Harper in supporting roles.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A movie about the opioid crisis in Appalachia should create lots of drama, but the trailer does little to excite.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There’s some ptential here, but the trailer wasn’t entirely successful in making the film look appealing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Borat writer-director turns his focus to teenage angst in what could be a surprise hit comedy.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The movie could be funny but the trailer is a dud and elicits few laughs.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Curiosity is the only thing that would draw me out to see this one.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Festival hit about souls waiting to be born was a double Film Independent Spirit Award nominee last year.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have no idea what this movie is about, but between good early reviews and a trailer that made me want more, it should be worth seeing.
