Wide releases still appear to be on the distant horizon, but the uptick in coronavirus cases is no doubt worrisome to Hollywood studios and theaters alike. We’ll see if those currently scheduled for release in August will be moved again in the not-so-distant future.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The cast might be worth it, but the trailer isn’t great.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like another heavy-handed melodrama from Atom Egoyan who hasn’t had a hit in more than twenty years.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The director and cast are all good, but I am just unsure about the premise, and the early reviews make it sound like a miss from Atom Egoyan.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like a hackneyed seriocomedy with little of interest in it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Geezer comedies aren’t my thing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a charming if slight film of elderly patients trying to escape out of a retirement home. Probably not great but something we could all enjoy right now.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The concept isn’t fresh, but it looks like it could be somewhat fun.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Groundhog Day revisited could be the kind of escapist fare we need right now.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I really enjoyed Groundhog Day, and while this has a twist of at least two people realizing that they are repeating the day, I am not sure it will be an improvement on that one.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A fascinating concept, but a terrible trailer.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Not sure if this take on a teenage Japanese orphan rock band is profound or merely bizarre.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A frenetic trailer gives the bare bones of the story, but I am not sure that a group of orphans necessarily will make a fantastic movie.
