It seems that animated or kid-friendly movies are doing far better at the pandemic box office than other types of movies as evinced by last week’s #1 finish for The Croods: A New Age in its thirteenth week in release. The film spent two weeks at number one upon release, spent eight weeks bouncing between second and third place and then jumped back to the top spot, which it has now held for two more weeks, bringing it to a total of five weeks at number 1 and thirteen weeks in the top 3, which will notch the film higher on the all-time top lists. Anyway, with a new animated picture coming out, more a combo live-action/animated film, the two-week reign should end with a new top finisher.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks atrocious. Roger Rabbit was one thing, but this looks like a horrendous cash-grab.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Clever idea for a cartoon, but not sure there’s enough here to sustain a full-length feature.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): There might be some humor in the film, but it was sorely lacking in the trailer and the action just looked silly and stupid.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While it would be nice to see Tom Holland doing a bit of serious acting for a change, the trailer is off-putting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Early reviews for Tom Holland’s PTSD drama are good, but the trailer doesn’t draw me in.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not sure what this film is trying to be and the trailer is all over the place, which will not help bring in an audience.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks like one of those multi-arc films that aren’t nearly as interesting as they think they are.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): All-star thriller set around the opioid crisis looks like it might be interesting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Some tension appears in the trailer about a new opioid type of painkiller, but some scenes did seem overblown.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It’s one of the year’s top Oscar contenders, so it’s must-see. That said, I’m really do get tired of the Oscar-baity Alzheimer’s pics.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Frank Langella won a Tony for the Broadway version, can Anthony Hopkins win an Oscar for the film version?
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have been looking forward to this film about a family dealing with the father’s dementia, as the performances of Hopkins and Colman are said to be top-notch.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Another Groundhog Day-like adventure that has promise, but still remains a question mark.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Genre defying blend of Groundhog Day and Flatliners looks well made might be a bit much.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): If I hadn’t read a blurb about a young black gay man reliving the same day over and over when he is shot and killed by white policemen, I would not have made any sense of the trailer. Even so, I am still not sure what it is trying to be about.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The Jewish rite of Shimera is an unusual setting for a supernatural horror film, but it holds promise of being somewhat inventive, which could be interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This week’s horror entry starts with a novel idea but looks like it soon devolves into the usual bumps nd scares of the genre.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The early reviews are good, but the trailer is cheesy and just does not convey a sense of dread or horror.
