With two new wide releases this weekend, it’s a surprisingly bountiful weekend. That said, it’s one of the few so far this year with fewer still in sight. That said, Judas and the Black Messiah is likely to do much better than Land considering it lends itself more to box office sensation than does the introspective film Land. Still, the film’s releasing simultaneously on HBO Max, so it may not be much of a debut.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): If only for Daniel Kaluuya’s performance, but the film looks rather interesting apart from that.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This historical biography has been one of the year’s most highly anticipated films for some time.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The critics are loving this but a loud trailer did few favors for the movie, not really enticing me to see it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It’s not exactly a common film to see, but it looks common.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Robin Wright’s directorial debut looks gorgeous but comes a bit late in awards season to make much of a dent.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer gets across the hurt the two main characters are suffering, but I am not sure that is enough to make me want to see the film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This Oscar contender has a must-see vibe even if the concept isn’t as compelling.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This already highly awarded film abut Korean immigrants in 1980s Arkansas should heap a slew of Oscar nominations.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): For a surprisingly known cast, this thriller looks pretty stupid and just not that interesting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like a cheap direct-to-video style film with little to recommend it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Revenge thriller looks like a tough sell despite strong cast.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Allison Janney is a treasure, and while this comedy looks fun, I am dubious that the humor will hold up for the entirety of the film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Trying to figure out whether the young woman is schizophrenic or literally seeing things just isn’t put across as that interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This week’s dumb horror movie.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The thriller tries to get inside the mind of a schizophrenic and the trailer does a reasonable job of accomplishing that. But I am not sure it will be as interesting as the trailer makes it seem.

Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks to be an exceptional role for Michelle Pfeiffer, I just hope the movie is worthy of the performance.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like something we’ve seen a lot and that doesn’t make it terribly appealing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Lush cinematography and strong actors in this frontier lesbian drama, but Vanessa Kirby’s Oscar nomination will be for her other film this year.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Two women find love with each other in the 19th Century, much to the consternation of their husbands. Unfortunately it did not look that intriguing in the trailer.
