Every other major release has either been moved entirely onto a streaming service or into 2021. Wonder Woman 1984 is the only film attempting a day-and-date release with HBO Max streaming it the same day as it releases to theaters. The box office will obviously be depressed, but there’s no reason to think it won’t be the weekend’s top new release.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Westerns are one of my least favorite genres and this film looks like it doesn’t do much new with the genre, thus making it less interesting to me inspite of who’s involved.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Traditional western with a twist could appeal to older audiences.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A lackluster trailer does little to sell this new western, but reviews are good and a reliable director and star should make this worthwhile, though not sure how it will score with the Oscars.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This is a great must-see film. Seen it. Loved it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Ordinarily not something I would want to see but rave reviews and awards for Carey Mulligan have me interested.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Carey Mulligan has been talked up as an Oscar possibility for the role, but it is hard to tell is this revenge fantasy comedy will prove a good fit for the Oscars. I am unsure after watching the trailer.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’ve long anticipated this sequel, but I’m miffed that Warner Bros. has chosen to release it day-and-date on HBO Max, a service I have no intention of subscribing to, and theaters, a place where this pandemic has determined I won’t be going for over a year.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): There may be a story here, but it’s so buried in CGI that I have no intention of putting myself through it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The original film was fun, but this looks to be a somewhat tepid sequel.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The premise and cast have a lot going for them.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a nicely opened up version of the stage play.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): From what I hear of the film, the trailer does little justice to the actors or director of what sounds like one of the winners of the year.
