Looking at the Weekend: Dec. 2-4, 2022

With so little to be sure of, it seems likely that another week at the top of the chart may be in order for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Of the new wide releases, only Violent Night seems likely to do well since it’s largely counter-programming to the Christmas season.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): Oversexualization of teen girls is one of the reasons I detest anime and this looks like it’s heading that route. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Unusual animated comedy about a man having to decide between five identical sisters is at least something different. Thomas LaTourette (TL): Oh dear this looks bad. Teenage angst and cuteness taken to a far degree.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): I do love a good Christmas horror film and this might be one. Peter J. Patrick (PP): This unappealingly violent Christmas movie is not for me. Thomas LaTourette (TL): There is some humor in the trailer and lots of violence, but they give away much of the film too.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): My interest in this film died when its star refused to seek treatment and decided he would just try to let everything blow over and try again. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Could be a decent Civil War drama but the director’s track record isn’t too good. Thomas LaTourette (TL): It could be a decent film, perhaps overblown, but I cannot imagine the Academy welcoming Will Smith back just yet. I am not sure I am either.

Patrick (PP): Seems to be a minor ghost story albeit with two strong performances from Tilda Swinton. Thomas LaTourette (TL): Two Tilda Swintons could be good, but the trailer of this mystery thriller elicited little interest from me.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): We’ve seen this story so many times that the trailer does a poor job of convincing me it’s worth seeing. Peter J. Patrick (PP): India’s submission for this year’s International Feature seems reminiscent of Cinema Paradiso. Thomas LaTourette (TL): The description sounds better than the trailer, so there may be a better film waiting to be seen. I do wonder how similar it will be to Cinema Paradiso.
