With the tepid debut of Blue Beetle fresh on everyone’s mind, barely eking out a victory over Barbie in her fifth week, there’s plenty of room for either of two of this week’s wide releases to come out on top. There are three titles releasing wide, Gran Turismo, The Hill, and Retribution. You can count The Hill out for the top spot, likely not even finishing in the top 5 or top ten. Retribution puts Liam Neeson in the summer with the type of movie that used to dominate the early spring. It’s running against the video game adaptation of Gran Turismo, which I think will ultimately wind up on top.

WIDE RELEASES

GRAN TURISMO

THE HILL

RETRIBUTION

Gran Turismo

Wesley Lovell: I’ve never been a fan of racing films or racing games or racing contests, so that this is almost an adaptation of all three just makes me want to see it less.

Peter J. Patrick: Can’t tell if this will be Neill Blomkamp’s best film since District 9 or just another of his many flops.

The Hill

Wesley Lovell: This type of wholesome tripe wants to be Field of Dreams, but doesn’t know how.

Peter J. Patrick: This triumph over adversity film has a strong cast including Bonnie Bedelia as the kid’s granny.

Retribution

Wesley Lovell: I haven’t been interested in Liam Neeson’s films since the 1990sโ€ฆback when he did stuff that required actual use of his talents.

Peter J. Patrick: I’m not interested in seeing Liam Neeson in another quick paycheck film.

LIMITED RELEASES

BEFORE, NOW & THEN

BOTTOMS

THE DIVE

FREMONT

GOLDA

OUR FATHER, THE DEVIL

PIAFFE

SCRAPPER

The Limited Slate

Wesley Lovell: Fremont has the most potential of the eight, but Before, Now & Then and Bottoms have potential while Golda has Helen Mirren.

Peter J. Patrick: Fremont looks like a charmer and Golda looks to be a showcase for Helen Mirren even if it falls short of Ingrid Bergman’s classic interpretation. The others are maybe at best.
