This weekend will be rather tough. Deciding which of the four wide releases will top the box office will be daunting since none of them seem like the kinds of films to normally top the box office. The Night House appeals to horror fans who’ve been loath to set foot in movie theaters lately. Paw Patrol: The Movie has potential as the only recent family-oriented film to release. The Protรฉgรฉ looks like a throw-away action film. Reminiscence has been weakly advertised, but is a sci-fi feature that features Hugh Jackman. I would first say Protรฉgรฉ has the weakest chance, then Reminiscence. Night House I give a small lead to since I don’t think Paw Patrol has enough fans to become a huge hit.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer has some interesting elements, so it could be worth a look.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Routine horror film with a strong performance from Rebecca Hall looks routine at best.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer starts out okay, but by the end it felt like any haunted house film which made it seem less exciting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’ve never seen the television program, so I have no interest in seeing a film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Kid’s movie from a Nickelodeon TV show doesn’t look especially interesting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It is probably fine for young kids who know the television show, but it looks like a difficult slog for adults.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like a rather rote action thriller.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Routine action thriller looks like fifty other films to me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Unfortunately it looks like an average revenge action fantasy, and I am not sure that a good director will make it good enough.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There’s some promise here, but it’s been kept on the down low for too long, suggesting it’s probalby not that good.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Highly anticipated thriller from the writer-producer-director of TV’s Westworld should be worth a look.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I really like Hugh Jackman, but the slow trailer was not enough to truly interest me in the film. Hopefully it is better than that.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I don’t like the animation style and the premise didn’t really grab me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Animated thriller offering something new might be worth our time.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks unlike most animated films and tries for different themes, but the weak animation style and oddity may keep people away.

Wesley Lovell (WL): It appears to be yet another uninspired possession film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Creepy horror film doesn’t do anything for me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The director’s District 9 was a great film, but this looks to be nowhere near as good unfortunately.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Sean Penn can be hit or miss and this directorial effort doesn’t look that enticing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Sean Penn’s latest directorial effort looks too heavy-handed to draw significant awards attention.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer really does not show what the movie will be about and worse makes one not care about finding that out.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A love triangle that looks like so many others.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Seems to be a somewhat tedious exploration of polyamorous relationships on the French Riviera.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The tale of polyamory could have interest, but the trailer elicits little passion for any of the characters.
