We may finally be getting the Barbie killer. After several lackluster box office debuts and Barbie‘s steady decline, Blue Beetle may have what it takes to top the film, but perhaps not by much. It’s a minor character in the DC universe and interest in DC films has been mediocre at best. Still, it’s the first such film centering entirely on a Hispanic family, so it could do quite well at the box office, even if not at Justice League numbers. That said, the raunchy comedy Strays has just the same potential of topping the box office. Matter of fact, Stray Beetles could be the new top-two finishers of the weekend, though perhaps that eponym needs a bit of work.

WIDE RELEASES

BLUE BEETLE

STRAYS

Blue Beetle

Wesley Lovell: The trailers have been abysmal, but the lack of Hispanic superheroes certianly makes this an important film to find success.

Peter J. Patrick: The trailer isn’t very interesting.

Thomas La Tourrette: The DC universe has never caught on the way Marvel has, but this looks like a decent film.

Strays

Wesley Lovell: I love raunchy comedy and while this is certainly promising, I don’t care much for the voice cast.

Peter J. Patrick: This looks horrible.

Thomas La Tourrette: This looks like a truly bad comedy and I have no desire to see it.

LIMITED RELEASES

THE ADULTS

BACK ON THE STRIP

BIRTH/REBIRTH

DEAD SHOT

LANDSCAPE WITH INVISIBLE HAND

MADELEINE COLLINS

MUTT

SIMONE: WOMAN OF THE CENTURY

The Limited Slate

Wesley Lovell: Landscape with Invisible Hand looks most interesting, but Dead Shot and Mutt also have potential.

Peter J. Patrick: Lots of maybes here, but nothing I’m anxious to see.

Thomas La Tourrette: I was not that impressed with the Magic Mike series, and Back on the Strip looks like a knock off version of that. At least Landscape with Invisible Hand is a science fiction movie with a different take, though I’m not sure it will be that good.
