After a lull in new wide releases, we get two simultaneously. Although Hollywood is still adapting to the new normal, as the summer progresses we should see more such films, though not in the bountiful numbers we’re used to. Of this week’s new releases, only Mortal Kombat has the potential to win the weekend. Godzilla vs. Kong is long enough in the tooth to potentially be no threat, but there’s no guarantee another adaptation of Mortal Kombat will turn out audiences.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Video game adaptations are almost always miss-or-miss, so I’m not terribly intrigued.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I have no interest in this film based on a video game. Absolutely none.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Having never played the game this is based on, I have nothing to go on. It looks pretty stupid with rather lame effects.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A dull looking horror feature.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This week’s most obviously inane horror film does nothing for me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A singer starts turning into a werewolf. Even though some early reviewers like it, it sounds pretty silly and the trailer did not make me want to see it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Another dull looking horror feature with a different plot.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another low grade horror film and another waste of time.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): For a horror film, there is very little gore in the trailer, more a hallucinogenic feel. The trailer does not sell the film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It might be mildly amusing, but that’s all I expect.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Awkward comedy treatment of a serious subject matter looks like a missed opportunity.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): here is enough in the trailer to think it might be a mildly amusing film, but nothing to make it seem like more.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer just doesn’t interest me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Real-life torture films are hard enough to sit through, we don’t need fictional ones.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): While a good movie could be made about a journalist being kidnapped and tortured, I sincerely doubt it is this film.
