The biggest question is whether Hellboy can overcome the inevitable bad reviews (the film wasn’t screened for critics) and top After, which will also have to overcome bad reviews. Could the likely poorly reviewed Little surprise everyone and win? The only other wide release this week could benefit from the collapse of the others thanks to its likely strong reviews (Laika’s always done well with critics). The others would have to crash with less than $15 million for that outcome though, as Laika, in spite of a stellar history with critics, has never managed to muster more than $17 million at the box office for opening weekend.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Another teen romantic drama that looks about as generic as all the others with its tortured male figure and female lead setting out to fix him.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Trashy looking teen melodrama in which I have absolutely no interest.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Looks like an average teen romance film to me.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The Guillermo del Toro films were a delight, but this looks like it might be torturous to sit through.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I don’t why we need a re-boot of Guillermo del Toro’s 15-year-old hit, but maybe the filmmakers know what they’re doing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I enjoyed the earlier series of Hellboy, but this one feels like it is missing the humor that made that one better.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer is modestly funny at times. That’s not a glowing recommendation, though, so it might not be terribly worth it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Big in reverse, but why do we need it?
Thomas LaTourette (TL): There have been many similar movies like this one, but this felt like it overstayed its welcome by the time the trailer was done.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Everything Laika has ever done has been absolutely delightful, so I look forward to each film with excitement.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Highly anticipated return of Laika Animation looks like a class act befitting their legacy.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Laika has done well with animated films, though this one feels like a weaker entry.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As much as I love Andrew Scott, his involvement is the only reason I have any interest in this pedestrian-looking film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): British mystery set in backwater USA looks intriguing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Nothing about the trailer made this film look terribly interesting, though perhaps a little distasteful.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Michelle Yoeh is the only reason this film even looks interesting as the rest of it looks like a typical Asian martial arts action film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This week’s martial arts drama has Michelle Yeoh in it, so it can’t be all bad.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not into the martial arts movies, and while the scene with the drinking glass was clever, the rest just seems to be fight after fight.

Wesley Lovell (WL): This girl-raises-lion drama looks conventional and predictable.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Fascinating production that took 2 1/2 years to film so that the kids could grow up with the lion cub.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Unhappy girl meets lion cub, and things change when they grow up. Most of you can figure out where this is going.

Wesley Lovell (WL): I love Elle Fanning and early word on the film is solid, so I’m quite interested in seeing how it turns out.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Max Minghella’s directorial debut looks like an earnest exercise.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Elle Fanning is usually worth a look, but the story has been done before though the trailer gives away little.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer does not highlight the film very well and the comedy feels more stilted than enticing, making this a film that early word is giving more interest in it than the trailer is.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Minor comedy tries to rewrite istory in the vein of “The Favourite” – looks mildly entertaining.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I had hopes for this, but the trailer spends so much time in semi-risque humor that I lost interest before it was done. It might prove okay, but I am dubious.
