Last Week’s Results

A little bit of success gets spread across four new releases with surprisingly little cannibalism. Elysium easily captured the weekend box office crown, though with numbers a bit softer than expected. Meanwhile, We’re the Millers overcame terrible reviews to provide a potent force for the weekend, coming in second place. Planes, the formerly direct-to-video sequel of Cars came in third in spite of the perception that it might do better over the weekend than previously expected. Rounding out the top four of new releases was Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, a sequel I never thought would see the light of day with the unexceptional box office numbers of its predecessors. It did a adequate 5-day opening, but wasn’t otherwise spectacular.
