Horror and stupid comedies generally make big splashes on rental charts but here they make a big splash on the sales chart with The Ringer taking the number one spot and When a Stranger Calls coming in shotgun. Other new entries include the movie-to-musical theater-to-movie musical The Producers coming in at a strong 4th and the dreadful Doogal finishing 8th with swirl-themed romance Something New newly arrived at 9.

A week weak in sales has prompted The Chronciles of Narnia and Munich to return to the top 10 while new release Date Movie took the top spot. Also new on the chart are Freedomland at 4 and Riddick Trilogy at 6.

While Firewall took the rental chart in its debut, Underworld: Evolution bumps from second on that chart to first on the sales chart. It’s clear that Underworld ‘s niche audience is more interested in owning it than renting it. For the first time since I’ve been monitoring two television series put season compilations into the chart.

The Pink Panther debuts at the top of the charts not surprisingly. There isn’t much really to be shocked about here except Firewall‘s noticeable plunge to 7 from 2.

Syriana may have been the top rental last week, but two films of genres that are immensely more own-able topped it in sales. Eight Below took in the kiddie/parent crowd while HIlls Have Eyes capitalized on the horror fanbase. High School Musical doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere any time soon but the rest of the chart is typically fluid.

Failure to Launch, as expected, debuted at the top this week. Madea’s Family Reunion pulled a decent second place finish. The only unexpected aspect was that only three of last week’s Top 10 Sales vehicles stayed another week on the chart.

With its stellar performance in rentals, it’s no surprise that Failure to Launch remained on top against the only debut The Matador which failed even more strongly on this chart than on the video chart. Things aren’t likely to change when Basic Instinct 2 comes out next week. The big surprises here are the return to the top 10 of two other films. High School Musical seems to be steaming along as it returns to the 10th position but even more unlikely, though expected considering its performance at the box office, the original Pirates of the Caribbean rises from the depths like its storied undead to wreak havoc on the top 10 sales chart.

We were unable to obtain the August 5 chart, but we’re back on track with the chart for the 12th. She’s the Man debuts at the top of the chart followed by ATL. Pirates stays strong on the sales chart while its couterpart is falling on the box office chart. High School Musical is doing phenomenally well after 9 weeks on the chart.

Another week without a chart. It makes it very hard to see patterns. However, we do know that The Bencwarmers was #1 last week and has fallen to 3. Final Destination 3 debuted at #2 and fell to position 4. Spider-Man 2 leaps into the 5th spot after lingering last week at #12. Failure to Launch has rebounded from no. 8. Last week’s #3, Chappelle’s Show: The Lost Episodes Uncensored fell four positions while She’s the Man is beating a similarly hasty retreat from 4 to 8. Pirates mania is slipping as Curse of the Black Pearl falls to #9. Van Helsing rises from #35 all the way to #10. This week’s two new entries are The Shaggy Dog at #2 and the unsurprising debut of V for Vendetta at #1.

V for Vendetta toppled from the top spot after one week to be replaced by Inside Man. Only last week’s The Shaggy Dog, The Benchwarmers and Final Destination 3 stuck around on the chart. The direct-to-video sequel Bring It On: All or Nothing edged out Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector for the number 3 position.

RV positioned itself at the top of this week’s sales chart beating out rival Scary Movie 4. Meanwhile, The Simpsons’ Eighth Season DVD makes the highest debut of a television program I’ve yet seen. Pirates can’t stay down as it re-enters the top 10 for the second time this year.

How does a video game-based rental dud manage to be the top seller? It’s impossible to tell but Silent Hill managed to top Poseidon at the top of the chart. TV show House proves potent on the sales chart opening at position 7.

It is officially a dreadful period for movies. Not only does a direct-to-video animated sequel top the sales chart but continuing weak performances on other charts are creating the impression that people aren’t enjoying their movies. Brother Bear 2, purportedly one of Disney’s last direct-to-videos sequels to be produced topped The Sentinel, Take the Lead and Akeelah & the Bee all against expectations (namely, it hasn’t appeared at all on the rental chart).

Since I’ve been tracking, this week’s chart is the first on which a television series premieres at the top. Lost‘s second season tops this week’s chart while most of the rest of the chart stays virtually the same, shifting down only slightly. United 93 debuts behind Lost.

The sales chart is brand new this week with the exception of last week’s top 2, Lost season 2 fell from first to tenth place while United 93 fell from 2 to 9. The rest of the top 10 is completely new with three re-releases and three television series. The Wild, however, ended up the top dog of the pack, the only kids-friendly film in the top 10. Grey’s Anatomy season 2 came in at position 2. Smallville‘s fifth season came in at position four and The Office: Season Two premiered in 8th. Star Wars and its sequels Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedifell into release order in positions five, six and seven. Lucky Number Slevin, the leader of the rentals chart for two weeks fills out the top 10 debuts at number 3 .

What an embarrassing week. Not only did The Wild fail to hold on to the top spot, a direct-to-video Barbie movie topped the chart.The 12 Dancing Princesses becomes the second such video to top the chart marking a decidedly weak period in the sales charts. Meanwhile, the last direct-to-video top-spot debut, Brother Bear 2, returned to the top 10 at number 10.

The Fast and the Furious takes the top spot on the rental chart in a reverse of last week’s top 3 on the rental. The Lake House came third behind Curious George. One Tree Hill‘s third season dvdset premieres at 7th. Barbie falls half way down the chart while The Wild tumbles only one position.

Not terribly surprising, but nonetheless unexpected, The Little Mermaid tops the rentals top debuter X-Men: The Last Stand. The trilogy box set for the X-Men also debuts high at number 5. Unexpectedly placing in the top 10, unlike most other non-animated re-releases, the Scarface: Special Edition debuted at position 8.

Adam Sandler’s Click tops this week’s sales chart just ahead of last week’s #1 and #2 films, which slide slightly one position each. Waist Deep debuts in the fourth position while feline sequel Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties limps in at fifth. The Fox and the Hound, one of Disney’s most recent pulled-from-the-vaults release, found limited success debuting below Garfield. A Prairie Home Companion was better received as a rental than as asales offering as it premiere’s at position 9.

Not surprising anyone, Over the Hedge debuted in the top spot sending last week’s number 1, Click tumbling to number 3. The Break-Up didn’t live up to its rental chart performance finishing second while The Omen enters the chart at number 5.

Surprisingly, Nacho Libre was not very popular with sales as it wasn’t on the rental chart finishing third after last week’s number one.

Despite failing to topple Mission: Impossible III in its rentals chart debut last week, Cars takes Impossible down to debut at number one on this week’s sales chart. Little Man comes in third while the big screen sequel The Santa Clause 3 helped propel The Santa Clause back into the top 10.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest is no surprise to top the sales chart for this week. It even pulls in the long-off-the-charts prequel The Curse of the Black Pearl into the top 10. More than half the chart is gone replaced by new DVDs Miami Vice, Beerfest, 24 (Season 5) and The Polar Express (returning to the top 10 for the second time this holiday season).

Disney direct-to-video sequel Cinderella III beat out Clint Eastwood’s Flags of Our Fathers for the top spot on this week’s sales chart. It’s premiere highlights two things. The first is that Eastwood’s Flags is virtually a financial disaster, having failed first at the box office and now on the sales chart. The second is that the sales chart is indelibly weak during the early months of each year otherwise a third-rate animated sequel can top the chart.

We now know why Flushed Away did so abysmally on the rental chart. Instead of renting it, most households bought it, bringing Flushed Away to the top of this week’s sales chart.

Following its successful debut on the top of the rental chart, Borat topped the sales chart just ahead of the reissue of Peter Pan. South Park‘s ninth season opened at 8 and the rest of the chart saw standard downard movement. The Secret broke that trend and edged up one more position to sixth showing amazing staying power.

Borat tumbles from the number one position down to fourth with last week’s number two film coming in ahead of it. New films Casino Royale and The Holiday take the top two spots at the box office. The new direct-to-video Barbie: Fairytopia comes in a solid, but disappointing sixth.

Despite its third-place opening on the rental chart, Eragon manages to top the sales list just above its competitor Blood Diamond. Films that focus on younger audiences tend to do significantly better on the sales chart than the rental as many parents buy them to allow their children to watch repeatedly. Next week, we should see a top-spot finish of Happy Feet.

Twilight manages to spend a second week in the number one position on the top sales chart. Quantum of Solace can’t dislodge the tween romantic drama and winds up in second place with the second week in release for Bolt leaps into the top 10 to land at #3.
