The DVD Report: September 11

Peter takes another break from Movies on DVD to tackle the Emmy Awards where he waxes philosphical on the show itself and then proceeds to pick his winners from the past season.

As you may notice, this page is no longer home to the report itself. In order to decrease the size of the pages I was uploading every week (and having to sift through to edit), I decided to break down the report monthly so that each month has its own page. This is the culmination of those efforts. You’ll find above a link to all the past months’ reports and when I post this post every week, I’ll give an idea of what Peter’s going to discuss and provide a link to the specific page in question as you can see below.

The DVD Report: September 18

It’s back to the old grindstone as Peter heads back to new releases looking at some horror films releasing to DVD in time for Halloween and an early-year Oscar contender from one of the stars of The Sweet Hereafter.

The DVD Report: September 25

Peter’s back in form reviewing the big screen musicals with a few new releases peppered among other films.

The DVD Report: October 2

Taking a look back at gross-out comedies, Peter looks at Knocked Up and the films that have acted as signposts to its development. He also takes a look at the new release of Evening, the television series Nip/Tuck and Boston Legal.

Secondarily, he takes a look at various anniversary collections waiting in the wings and gives his thoughts on what he’d like to see released next year.

The DVD Report: October 9

Peter starts this week off in typical fashion, giving us a glimpse of Funny Face, a classic horror collection, D. H. Lawrence adaptation The Virgin and the Gypsy and the television miniseries Little Women.

He then goes on to briefly discuss the career of thespian Angela Lansbury and her Murder, She Wrote guest casting connections.

The DVD Report: October 16

This week’s report takes us to places on the web where one might find some of the oldest and hardet-to-find DVD releases of films that studios don’t apparently want us to see.

The DVD Report: October 23

In preparation for Halloween, Peter gives us a look at his favorite horror films from Frankenstein through The Sixth Sense and many things in between.

He also provides us with a list of films to watch in honor of the work and career of Deborah Kerr who died October 18 at the age of 86.

The DVD Report: October 30

Peter once again is on the recent-release DVD trail after tarying from his path for last week’s Halloween updat. He looks at a number of new and recent releases including a glimpse at the new Stanley Kubrick collection and more Criterion Collection DVDs

The DVD Report: November 6

This week, Peter returns to the musical genre with another retrospective, this time cataloguing the successes of musicals through the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s. He covers territory from Oklhaoma! all the way through Cabaret and even manages to bring down some of the genre’s failures.

Peter’s regular walk down memory lane is filled with several new recent releases this week.

The DVD Report: November 20

With the Thanksgiving holiday only two days away, Peter decided it was time to look at the slim pickings of Thanksgiving-themed films, which there are outrageously few. Afterwards, he decides to look at his favorite Christmas films. What he’ll do for Christmas now, I have no idea. ๐Ÿ™‚

The DVD Report: November 27

Thanksgiving is now over and Peter’s back to the DVD grind exploring new releases from Werner Herzog and the new version of Hairspray.

The DVD Report: December 4

Peter reviews a new Bob Hope collection along with several other new releases. His look at the Ford at Fox collection is sadly put off for a week.

The DVD Report: December 11

With no John Ford collection in sight, Peter takes us on a tour of the career of legendary Hollywood director John Ford, still the only person to win 4 Academy Awards in the Best Direction category.

The DVD Report: December 18

Could Peter have been any more excited about his John Ford collection? For the third straight week, he talks about the Ford at Fox collection and a handful of other new releases including The Bourne Ultimatum and December Boys.

The DVD Report: December 25

Peter finishes up his musical retrospective carrying forward from A Little Night Music to the most recent Hairspray along with a few new films in release this week.

2008

January 1, 2008

We begin 2008 with a retrospective of the best DVD releases of 2007 as Peter looks back with fondness and ranks the ten best. He’s also working on an update listing the Oscar nominees and winners that got their first DVD release in region 1 over the past year, so the report will be updated just as soon as this information is ready.

January 8, 2008

Peter returns to reviewing new releases and has several to look over. He leads off with Stardust and 3:10 to Yuma and moves on to the special edition of Zodiac and several older releases.

January 15, 2008

In preparation for the impending Oscar nominations in one week’s time, Peter has brought us this look at the films that were nominated for Best Picture on the 25th, 50th and 75th years of the Academy Awards.

To coincide with Oscar nomiantion morning and a new DVD release, Peter takes a look at the 1967 Academy Awards at the 40th Oscars.

In celebration of the life of one of the great, young modern thespiasn, ripped tragically from the world of cinema, Peter takes a look back at the masterful career of Heath Ledger.

February 5, 2008

Peter returns to his weekly recap of new releases focusing on The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Across the Universe, The Brave One and others.

February 12, 2008

This week, Peter looks at three specific groupings of new releases. First on his list are the films of Jane Austen. Next up is the Lubitsch musical collection and he winds up looking at a new Joan Crawford collection and a smattering of other films.

With the Academy Awards less than a week away, Peter takes us through the various Oscar-nominated films being released on DVD prior to the big event. He also looks at three new classic film collections that also earn releases this week.
