Review: (#1) They are taking the falling stars concept a bit too literally in this minimal teaser poster. The use of colors is nice, but the overall visual pleasure of the design is lacking.

(#2) A vibrant design that introduces the primary characters works in spite of a lack of detail. (#3-#4) These character posters are united visually with each having a slightly different nighttime tint, but ultimately unappealing. (#5) It’s an uncommon use of colors for a poster design, which makes it striking and it fits in a lot of interesting elements, but there’s also a stunning lack of background detail.

(#6) A lot of nice details without overburdening the design. The colors are more muted than most animated features, which gives it a uniqueness that’s uncharacteristic. A solid effort for a format design. (#7) While this one has a bit more empty space on offer, it’s well balanced and still has plenty to look at. Perhaps it could have been a wee bit more chaotic, but it’s a good effort. (#8) Determined, yet ultimately a bit staid and boring. It’s clear it’s animated and that will mean a lot to some, but it’s just dull. (#9) Even more dull than anything before it, this wish star motif might be cute, but it looks surprisingly cheap in spite of its animation.

(#10) A lot of little details, but it feels strangely vacant and lacking in joy in spite of their facial expressions. (#11) Not far removed from prior designs, the colors are nice and subdued compared to typical Disney fare, but it’s also a rather simplistic effort that looks derivative. (#12-#13) Two more uninspired character posters with nothing new to add.

Trailer Rating: B / B+ / B+

Review: (#1) Watching this trailer on a small screen will make the artistic merits of the film feel minor and uninspired. Perhaps they will play better on the big screen. We’re only given a brief glimpse of the villain of the piece, which should be what draws in viewers. Instead, we’re treated to a short scene of a goat becoming able to speak, which adds nothing of humor or excitement to the effort.

(#2) It’s close enough to release that we’re getting the full film premise and it has so much more potential than the prior trailer suggested. This is the probably the most Disney-like film preview we’ve had in some time and that could bolster its chances with audiences.

(#3) While the lyrics are interesting, the underscore to the songs are a bit tepid until the rousing finale, which more than makes up for the dull building the trailer does towards its conclusion. It should entice plenty of Disney animation fans.

Oscar Prospects:

It could be the year’s Best Animated Feature winner with other nominations pulled along in Original Song and Original Score.
