Review: (#1, B-) This is a terrifically interesting design. The house in which the film takes place sits in the upper half forming the top of the hourglass. While the skulls-as-sand idea is a bit corny, it certainly fits with the film’s premise quite well. The title doesn’t fit the effort well and the background contrasts poorly with the design in the front, but at least it draws the eye with its creative energy. (#2-#6) These character posters use a similar concept, which is common, but try to present unique figures outside the window. That variance along with the state of terror on each individual face are the only unique elements and they don’t quite make the efforts seem a bit underwhelming. That and the first four are all the same person just in different stages of dinginess. Not a potent choice. (#7, C) Using some overly familiar horror tropes in the design is underwhelming. The face lacks a sense of terror and the following figures don’t even look like they are after her with the clock motif a failure.

Review: (#1, B-) The trailer is, admittedly, not that good. It’s a very formulaic display of horror tropes. That said, the build up of the premise across the trailer is absolutely fascinating. This might just be one of those films whose gimmick will sell more tickets than the trailer itself does.

(#2, C+) The first trailer presented the concept effectively. This trailer does not. The backward motion of the figures, while being interesting in the context of the film itself, feel like overused clichés in a short trailer like this, especially how often they appear. The tension isn’t terribly compelling either, so check out the first trailer and ignore the second. You’ll remain more intrigued by the film’s possibilities that way.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
