Review: (#1) For a teaser, it works. Beyond that, it’s not that interesting. (#2-#10,#12) This series of character posters have some unique elements, but they are overburdened by the size of the figures dominating them. (#11) A unification of the characters will tell the viewer what the movie’s about, but is unlikely to generate much in the way of enthusiasm. (#13) Where have we seen this concept before? All over the place. It seems like a cheap way to create tension that doesn’t have much hope of success.

(#14-#19) This sextet of character posters give the viewer a little of what they want on a background that’s not inspired and with action that is likewise lacking in excitement. (#20-#24) These format advertisements are simplistic and don’t have enough in them to engage the viewer as much as they should. Some are better than others, but not by enough. (#25-#26) These intriguing graffiti designs are visually compelling and vibrant enough to draw the eye surprisingly making them the most interesting of all of the series’ designs. (#27) A design style we’ve come to expect from these large-“ensemble” pieces, but there’s a notable lack of background details in the sky, making it feel empty. (#28) This art piece strikes the viewer strongly even if it is shockingly bereft of details amongst the chaos.

(#29) This trio of faction designs is visually striking and they work in spite of the empty dirty-white background. A far more engaging effort than any of the other designs they’ve put together.

Trailer Rating: C+ / C+

Review: (#1) What made a film like Bumblebee stand out is that it left the fancy transformations behind and focused on the narrative. Those lessons weren’t well heeded because this trailer reverts much of the progress made and ultimately makes it look like yet another Michael Bay version and there aren’t that many people still interested in that.

(#2) Focusing on all of the action is what sells tickets to this type of film, but the end result isn’t something that feels fresh or unique in spite of the introduction of new characters.

Oscar Prospects:

It could be a Best Visual Effects nominee, but it also looks too busy to contend.
