Synopsis:
From IMDb: “A look at the brief occupation of Timbuktu by militant Islamic rebels.”
Poster: B / C+
Review: (#1) While it isn’t a compelling image outside of the context of the film, it’s brief inclusion in the trailer sets the tone and establishes the beautiful significance of the shot. (#2) This is a bit less revealing and just a bit oversimplified, which doesn’t increase its chances of broad acceptance by audiences.
Trailer: B
Review: I have no doubt the film has significance, but the trailer does a good, but unimpressive job at conveying that. Going nearly wordless may downplay the film’s foreign nature, but eliminates any meatiness to the premise that might draw anyone other than die hard Oscar enthusiasts.
Oscar Prospects:
It’s a 2014 Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film. From all appearances, though, the film is not a major contender to win, but any film could upset under the right conditions.
