Review: The makeup does a good job of masking Mike Myers’ features and the perpetual smile seems a bit too Hallmark, but there’s no denying that this poster’s softer colors and Myers name will entice viewers who haven’t seen the trailer, largely on name recognition.
With a bit more flare than the first poster, this second one is at least visually diverse, creating a number of elements that draw the viewer in. However, it is still little more than a second-rate audience-drawing poster that serves very little purpose in the realm of posters-as-art.
Exceptionally bland with only its flower power motif as an engaging element. Mike Myers’ presence on the poster is as much of a help as it is a disservice as it fits with the background, but poses the question: was it necessary for yet another poster that looks somewhat like the others?
Trailer Rating: C-; C+
Review: Myers seems to be a one-trick pony. While he has some interesting derivations, each of his roles seems to rely heavily on the same type of humor. Gone are the days of originality of Austin Powers. He plays peace and love here for laughs and gimmicks that will probably draw an audience, but one impress. Though, I have to give him credit for his “Oscar” skit at the end of the clip.
As referenced previously, this is not the Austin Powers of our fond memories. However, the second trailer suggests the film may be a little more zany and less insipid than the first trailer suggested. Still, it’s not likely to be much of a quality piece, but it will likely be successful.
Oscar Prospects:
Oscar only laughs when the humor is wry and not obvious. Myers has a tendency towards obvious humor. Count this one as a no-show, even in the Makeup and Art Direction categories where a film like this could inadvertently compete.
