Review: (#1, C+) A conventional poster for a film that must draw an unconventional audience. Sure, the Peter Jackson films had broad appeal but this won’t so it needs to be more appealing to Rings fans than this is. (#2, C+) A much more fitting design for this franchise with plenty of action and intrigue for fans of the series. That it won’t appeal beyond that is concerning.

Trailer Rating: C+ / C / C-

Review: (#1, C+) There’s a strange disconnect in the trailer between the anime style of the characters and the photorealistic style of some of the background elements and effects. That lack of cohesion draws the viewer out of the trailer. The connection to the original trilogy is somewhat well handled but might not draw fans to the film as readily as it should.

(#2, C) A bland trailer that once again ties into the live-action film but to little effect, making the film look like a substandard clone with no plotting of its own. This is a story not told in the earlier films or in the TV show, so it should feel more original but doesn’t.

(#3, C-) Another weak trailer that starts with imagery from the live-action film followed by mediocre animation from the film itself. It’s also incredibly short, making it difficult to build the kind of appeal it needs.

Oscar Prospects:

It will be one of the major contenders for Best Animated Feature, though a win is unlikely.
