Release Date:
September 12, 2014
Synopsis:
From IMDb: “A crime-drama centered around a lost pit bull, a wannabe scam artist, and a killing.”
Poster: B- / B- / C+
Review: (#1) Clever execution, but not particularly original, forward thinking or evocative of the film’s themes.
(#2) The style evokes a period long departed. Hearkening back to the 1970’s, the design has style, though not a lot of substance, but that wasn’t needed then and it’s probably not needed now. (#3) Apparently, the French require more obvious actor images on their designs. It houses the original poster’s design while diminishing it with actors that foreign audiences might still not even recognize.
Trailer: B-
Review: The concept is old, very old, which could be why it’s from Dennis Lehane. Films based on his writing aren’t terribly inventive or forward thinking, but they are pulp crime thrillers that have potential even when squandered.
Oscar Prospects:
None.
