Review: (#1, C-) No background and a face looking up into it do not make an appealing poster design. Also, it looks more like Thandie Newton than Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, who’s the only listed star on the poster.

Trailer Rating: C / B-

Review: (#1, C) The juxtaposition of historical narratives and the film’s makes the case that this could be an interesting film if it were more understandable what the premise actually is.

(#2, B-) The first trailer was a confusing mess, but this one does better at telling the viewer what the film’s about. There are still quite a few unclear concepts at work here and the cinematography looks purposeful, but bland. Together, I’m not sure they’ll sell the film as well as they want.

Oscar Prospects:

Ava DuVernay has chances, but the film has failed to make a dent in expectations and may struggle for nominations.
