Synopsis:
From IMDb: “In Moonfall, a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler is convinced she has the key to saving us all – but only one astronaut from her past, Brian Harper and a conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman believe her. These unlikely heroes will mount an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love, only to find out that our Moon is not what we think it is.”

Review: (#1) While this design does speak to certain elements of the film’s plot, you have to see the trailer to get it and even then it’s not particularly well executed.
(#2) That’s no moon. That’s also no realistic setting or positioning for these astronauts. (#3) The moon crashing into the earth is a fitting image, but it’s not that dramatic or appealing. (#4-#6) These rather dull character designs are utterly worthless. They have no depth and no creativity. (#7) There’s almost Star Trek like appeal to this design, though it doesn’t have enough detail in the background.

Review: (#1) That looming peril concept of the moon rolling over the earth’s surface doesn’t add any measure of impending dread the lack of reference to the characters in the film strikes at the heart of Emmerich’s problem. Spectacle over substance and that’s probably why his recent efforts have been failures rather than successes.
(#2) We finally get some information about the plot, perhaps too much information, but blending in the doom elements of this potential extinction event works somewhat well, the human element is limited and that still tells us that we shouldn’t expect much from the film.
Oscar Prospects:
Roland Emmerich’s films often compete in Sound and Visual Effects categories, but who knows what next year’s race will look like at this point.
