Review: (#1, C) The affectations on the white background might conjure up the idea of an explosion on a battlefield, which goes well with the military-style clothing Kate Winslet is wearing, don’t do enough to overcome the overbearing use of white as a background color. The insets in the title Lee are more interesting but insufficiently so. (#2, C-) Now you know for sure you’re watching a Kate Winslet movie as she’s all there is to see in this design and it’s most definitely not enough. You can’t even get the setting or concept of the film out of it.

(#3, C) There’s a certain lack of interest these designs generate, unable to give the viewer more context to the film. They might be able to pick up the older version of a camera and they will definitely pick up on the star but it just doesn’t have enough content to sell.

Trailer Rating: B- / B- / B

Review: (#1, B-) Focusing on the horrors of war is a fitting theme for a film about a war photographer whose entire goal is to take photos of things that others don’t want to see that would humanize the cost of war. The trailer plods along a bit but should appeal to a small subset of war film enthusiasts who want to examine the inhumanity and depravity even when it’s hard to watch.

(#2, B-) While this second trailer takes a somewhat different path than the prior, it still conveys the same horrific imagery and its thematic essence to the audience. Whether it will build an audience off the trailer rather than its own reputation is questionable.

(#3, B) Setting out the reason for Lee Miller to want to go to war as a photographer adds impetus and that may help viewers find reasons to go. It highlights a few horrors she witnesses and presents more of her performance to the audience to inspire them. Ultimately, it’s slightly more successful than the prior two efforts but probably still not enough to make it a hit.

Oscar Prospects:

It was a contender last year but was pushed back. That suggests it isn’t as strong a contender as we originally thought.
