Review: (#1) For fans of the original, this design is satisfactory, if unimpressive. (#2-#5) A bold decision to go simplistic, focusing on a single feature of the character who speaks or embodies the listed phrase. The unusual nature of these character posters gives them some strength, though the simplistic design aesthetic isn’t terribly appealing.

(#6-#13) These character posters have a dull background and dull title section, but otherwise work to sell these characters even if not distinctively.

(#14-#21) There’s at least one character missing in this series and one character that hasn’t been previously included. That seems a bit uneven. This set uses far too much blank space and the taglines are big and unwieldy. (#22) This base poster design features the most important characters based on the prior project and the new, but it trades heavily on the same blank white background that has been so frustrating recently.

(#23) This is the most visually distinct of the posters so far, but it has a lot of unused or improperly-filled space and ultimately seems like it’s trying too hard. (#24-#32) This set of character posters is most interesting. There is a vacancy to some of the space, but the rest is filled with interesting flavors of each character, allowing the audience to get to know them better without seeing the film first, and tangentially then wanting to catch them in the film.

Trailer Rating: B+ / F / B- / C

Review: (#1) An action-fuelled trailer that does terrific work at reminding fans of the original that they are interested in the film and its sequel while putting plenty of new folks into it to suggest a growing and interesting cast. (#2) This red band trailer adds one expletive at the very end, a complete waste of time and deserving of a failing grade.

(#3) Like the latest Blade Runner 2049 trailer, the film’s stylish predecessor is significantly better as the attempt to infuse more plot details forces the film’s style to take a back seat.

(#4) The Poppy Golden Circle announcement conceit wears thin fast and ultimately fails to impress or create a competent air of creativity.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
