Review: (#1, C+) Scale and setting are given solid representation, but the foreground character and his avian companion don’t engender much excitement.

(#2-#4, C) This trio of character posters feel artificial, the background painterly, the foreground overbearing and the central character unappealing.

(#5, C+) Forcing together a bunch of disparate images may be a commonplace tactic in poster design but they are usually put together more appealingly than this. While the image is symmetrically balanced, it’s not visually pleasing. (#6-#9, C) These format-specific designs each have their own charms but also all feel rather bland. (#10, B-) A distinctly different design from all the others with a well shaded yellow, black, and white motif that is striking enough to be appealing.

(#11, C) The king with his warriors in the rear makes for a stark design with no depth or creative energy. (#12, C) The grass embellishment is poorly fitting and the light source doesn’t match up between fore- and backgrounds. A dull effort. (#13, C+) A nice attempt to do something different with a pyramid structure to the characters but since there are only three depicted, it looks a bit bland. (#14, C) Another design where the lighting doesn’t match and the depth of color in the foreground is more vibrant than the background, which makes both segments stick out poorly. (#15, C) Another poor lighting configuration with disparate color depth. (#16, B+) A far cry from the prior designs and while this doesn’t have a lot of background detail, it’s an intriguing symbolic effort with fascinating details.

Review: (#1, C+) Whether this is a prelude to the original Charlton Heston Planet of the Apes or not isn’t clear. What is clear is its return to the most recent trilogy, but there’s not enough excitement to thrill and entice.

(#2, B-) We get more information about the film itself, though some of the action sequences look overly familiar and not particularly exciting. While it does hint at this being more of a thinking movie, it wants to be both and doesn’t look like it blinds thinking and action sufficiently.

(#3, C) Starting with a lengthy scene from the film, one presented in a prior trailer, doesn’t create nearly as much excitement as it should and the remainder of the trailer does little to alleviate the issues.

(#4, B) The most exciting and compelling trailer they have yet made, the audience finally gets a genuine account of what they are in for. The stakes are high and the situation is involving and that helps elicit interest better than anything that’s come before.

Oscar Prospects:

A Visual Effects nomination seems likely, but nothing else.
