Review: (#1, C-) Sure it shows the actors in character but it’s such a dull effort it’s rather disappointing.

(#2, C) The blood splatters seem appropriate but the lack of affectations don’t give the design enough of a jolt to make it exciting. (#3-#4, C-) These character posters are unadorned and simply don’t excite though one has to wonder if it was intentional to make Phoenix’s design appear like he’s emulating the TV series’ Joker Cesar Romero, which would be deeply disturbing considering the content of each production.(#5, C) This “selfie” design puts the viewer in the picture but doesn’t make it feel enticing. (#6, C+) The frequently emulated scene from the first film is a fitting tease to audiences who are excited to see how it plays into the sequel.

(#7, C) Not much of a difference here from other designs, at least nothing that’s worth getting excited over. (#8, C) A little more cinematic but still incredibly generic. It’s not the kind of design one would expect from a film with this much of a budget.

(#9, B-) The red is overbearing and makes it difficult to look at. However, once you get past that and focus into the details inside the Janus-style head, you get something that looks quite interesting. It’s an artistic effort that mostly works.

Trailer Rating: C+ / C- / C / C+

Review: (#1, C+) While it doesn’t quite tell the audience that the entire film is a musical, there are hints at that in a few scenes. That said, if you were hoping for something more concrete or compelling, this trailer won’t provide that.

(#2, C-) A brief reference to this being a musical is outweighed by focusing on the burgeoning relationship between the Joker and Harley Quinn. It seems like the producers want to sell the film entirely on its connection to the original and its ultra-violence but doesn’t want to suggest that it has any significance in its plotting.

(#3, C) Once again, the film fails to identify its musical trappings and while the picture certainly becomes clear that fans of the original will find something to enjoy in it, the whole production looks a bit weak from a plot perspective.

(#4, C+) We finally get some substantive music to the trailer but it’s one song and it’s just a part of the soundtrack, there’s no visual representation of it. This makes the fourth trailer for the film that seems more interested in telling fans its a continuation of the first film and not a story of its own.

Oscar Prospects:

Joker was an Oscar nominee and winner for Joaquin Phoenix, so we have to put it down as a potential contender but I suspect the sequel will not do much with the Academy.
