Synopsis:
From IMDb: “As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden.”
Poster Rating: B
Review: If you look at the poster too closely, you’ll miss the key reason it succeeds. While the eyes are focused on the stage image at the focal point of the design, a faint image of Jerrica surrounds it, putting Jem herself squarely in the dreams of real life. It’s a nice symbolic representation of the film’s themes.
Trailer Rating: C / C
Review: (#1 & #2) There isn’t a lot of difference between these two trailers. They both expose how little the film adaptation is like the original series. There, Jerrica was the owner of Starlight Music and through her father’s robot Synergy used her earrings to project holograms over her body and become the superstar Jem. Here, Jem is merely an alter ego for a teen girl who hopes to escape her formality and lead the life of a pop star at the hands of a separate individual who owns Starlight and wants to sell her image while pulling her away from her friends who are initially her bandmates. Synergy still exists, but looks to represent her connection to her dead father and his hopes for his child. The trailer doesn’t give the audience enough impetus to see it based on its connection to the original series and might have been better as a stand alone, unaffiliated project since most fans of the 80’s cartoon aren’t likely to be enamored with the radical changes.
Oscar Prospects:
None.
