Review: (#1, C) While the floral elements are pretty, it speaks nothing to the theme or premise of the film, nor does Blake Lively’s smiling visage. (#2, C-) This has a slightly more thematic feel to it but it’s dully constructed with too much empty whitespace. The title font isn’t good but the font used for the actor names is nice.

(#3, C) This one has a little more tension than the prior effort but still not enough to sell the film.

Trailer Rating: C+ / C-

Review: (#1, C+) Trying to establish what this film’s about is a heavy burden with a narrative like this one. It wants to paint its idyllic relationship too rosily and not build on the growth of its protagonist anything but the cheapest way. Perhaps this will have some appeal to fans of the novel but for everyone else it will seem so predictable.

(#2, C-) Backtracking on how much of the plot to reveal in the trailer, this second effort feels like it should have been the first. It has a lack of focus, no attention to its abusive relationship central element and elimination of the life-saving romantic entanglement angle. Ultimately, the trailer makes this feel like an incomplete film and that won’t make it much money.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
