Review: (#1, C) This teaser poster has just enough information to be interesting to some, but it won’t be broadly appealing.

(#2, C) Selling the film entirely on Kevin Costner might be their only option but this dull-as-dishwater design with a cheaply-positioned backdrop don’t generate any appeal. (#3-#15) These character posters might have somewhat individual backdrops but they use the same color scheme, making them blend together, yet there’s little effective cohesion.

(#16) It’s a nice homage to the westerns of the past and with a few notable details, it does draw one’s attention. That said, I can’t imagine this will appeal very broadly.

Trailer Rating: C / B / C

Review: (#1, C) While it does an adequate job of setting the two-part element, this theatrically-released miniseries doesn’t have enough narrative details to create any measure of appeal.

(#2, B) This longer trailer shows far more information about the film than we previously got but also makes it feel much more like a grand miniseries that might have shown in the 1970s but might be ill-fitting to the big screen. Still, the production values are strong, though the anti-Native American elements make the possibilities a bit concerning.

(#3, C) While this trailer finally gives the viewer the plot of the film, the movement of American citizens into the wild west, it does so without genuinely explaining the purpose of the film or why it’s broken into two parts. Of course, it doesn’t tell the audience that the film is actually a four-parter but perhaps that might dissuade viewers from the theater. Not like this trailer is going to steer them to it.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
