Review: (#1) The purple haze seems to compliment glowing red eyes and it’s frightening enough to entice the young viewers that made the game a hit. (#2-#5) These character posters take the prime aesthetic of the poster and then do nothing with it. With fewer figures, it looks all the more empty and too much less sinister.
(#6) Setting the time and place is effective here, but there’s a lot of empty space that’s poorly used. The animatronics do fine establishing the grizzly nature of the underlying source, it might not be enough to draw in the fans who’ve grown out of the game on which it’s based. (#7-#11) Similar to the prior set of character posters, these ball pit-set efforts don’t add or embellish anything, making them an uninspiring choice.
Trailer Rating: B- / B / C

Review: (#1) If you didn’t already know this film was based on a video game, this trailer won’t give you that impression. That’s it’s biggest selling point. While it seems a bit hokey in places, the frightening reality of the situation is given a strong set up and that might be enough to entice those who aren’t already fans of the game.
(#2) Expanding on the prior trailer and giving more tension to the film, this preview does excellent work setting stakes and enticing viewers with its frightening premise. This might even attract those who aren’t fans of the video game (or even those who’ve never heard of it).
(#3) All the excitement and intrigue of the prior trailers is completely missing here. The excitement is tepid, the over-explanation of plot is worrisome and the structure is just overwhelmingly dull.
Oscar Prospects:
None.
