Review: (#1) It’s simple and enough to sell fans, but not enough to bring in new viewers, nor is it more than passable.

(#2) This design has a nice balance of characters and images that conjure up simple evocations of the franchise. There are even nicely subtle hints as to locale, but ultimately it’s largely serviceable. (#3-#4) These face-off images lack substance and background detail. Along with a lack of color, the end result feels a bit staid. (#5-#10) While these are obviously not the entirety of the character designs for this film, the close-up of the actors with the variations of color are distinctive, but boring.

(#11-#17) Continuing the previous series of character posters, this new batch continues the effort to assign unique colors to each, but also maintains their tedium. (#18) The “X” motif is used well with a balance of figures inserted at individual and unique positions without feeling copied from other sources. The city skyline at the top and the chase sequence at the bottom don’t add sufficient amounts of material.

(#19) While highlighting one of the cooler scenes from the trailer helps, there’s a lot of empty space here, especially in the sky.

Trailer Rating: C+ / B- / C+ / C

Review: (#1) Fans of the series are in even before the trailer. So what is its intention? To rev up interest in those fans. Anyone who isn’t already a fan isn’t likely to jump in and say that this tenth film is where they want to start.

(#2) The adrenaline rush of these films comes through clearly in this latest trailer, as does the perpetual attack on “family.” The confusing part is in identifying which team certain individuals are fighting on. While fans of the series may instinctively know, that’s not sufficient to appeal to a new audience.

(#3) By this point, everyone knows what this franchise is about. Fast cars. Family. Fundamentally improbable stunts. Fans will make it in, but this trailer doesn’t add anything that would entice non-fans, so it seems unimportant in the grand scheme.

(#4) This final trailer amps up the action and oversells it. The narrative takes a back seat and the creators hope you’re excited about all the call backs and butt-kicking on display. That isn’t however the best option for a film like this.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
