Release Date:
Jul. 2, 2014
Synopsis:
From IMDb: “After receiving a bizarre series of encrypted messages, a group of kids embark on an adventure with an alien who needs their help.”
Poster: B+ / B- / B
Review: The first design doesn’t say a lot about the film’s plot, but it’s so visually arresting that it deserves some praise. The second design highlights the overly cutesy alien life form at the center of the tale. That doesn’t give one hope for more than a sweet, dismissable children’s film.
(#3) An imprecise amalgam of the first two posters, this foreign market design works perfectly for its task even if the cutesy alien is more prevalent than the human actors involved.
Trailer: C / B / C+
Review: Watching the evolution of movie trailers is frequently fascinating. Earth to Echo seems to have embodied the natural developments inherent in the medium. The first trailer is a short teaser that only hints at the things to come. It’s not particularly effective, but is tempting enough to make you want to see what the subsequent trailers can do. The second ramps up the excitement, develops the story into a coherent, recognizable form and tosses in a few really cool effects (the semi deconstruction scene in particular) to keep the audience interested. The third trailer goes into too much detail, replays most of the scenes from the first and second trailer and then sets up a film that seems less magical and more milquetoast than originally expected.
Oscar Prospects:
None.
