Review: (#1, C+) The attempt to conjure up images of James Bond doesn’t quite work though the colors are interestingly balanced. (#2, C) A more conventional design focusing more on the minions than reasonably necessary.

(#3, C+) The off-kilter nature works to the design’s advantage but the mixture of 3D models and 2D backdrop are incongruous and unbalancing. (#4, C+) The old Gru and the undercover Gru creates a nice dichotomy that tells the viewer the entire of the plot without much effort. Too bad there isn’t much in the way of detail with too much wasted space. (#5, C) No 2D background this time but more of the same of design #3 without any genuine excitement except perhaps for those who are fans of the minions. (#6, C-) It’s unclear if they are going for a Charlie’s Angels concept or not but their reliance on the minions to sell the film is misguided and the blue-and-yellow color scheme is garish.

Trailer Rating: B / B-

Review: (#1, B) Fans of Despicable Me and its predecessors are no doubt happy about the content presented in this trailer. It doesn’t reveal too much of the plot, but does examine the relationship between Gru and his infant son and that creates just enough interest to offset some of the lame gags presented. That said, there are also some quite funny ones, which makes the effort an overall success.

(#2, B-) More of the plot is revealed in this trailer yet it still feels like we haven’t gotten to the heart of the matter. The overused minion humor wears thin quickly and the minimal human elements ultimately weighs the trailer down.

Oscar Prospects:

The third film struggled with the Academy, so don’t expect the fourth to earn a nomination unless it’s an incredibly weak year.
