Release Date:
October 17, 2014
Synopsis:
From IMDb: “A satire that follows the stories of four black students at an Ivy League college where a riot breaks out over a popular ‘African American’ themed party thrown by white students. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, the film explores racial identity in ‘post-racial’ America while weaving a universal story of forging one’s unique path in the world.”
Poster: C+ / C+
Review: A four-quadrant design that hasn’t been as frequently used in recent years, but which still doesn’t convey anything competent about the film it represents. The color scheme is different, which is a defining quality, but it’s otherwise a generic option.
(#2) The Afro element is tackled in the trailer, which links the poster to the film, but it’s limited amusement value is quickly lost.
Trailer: B+ / B+
Review: There’s a delightfully irreverent quality to this trailer that suggests a film that is as pointedly political as it is obviously tongue-in-cheek. The potent combination could be a great deal of fun, though it won’t likely appeal to as many people as it should.
(#2) Another wickedly funny trailer that finally gives the audience an idea of what they might be in for. Pointed language and surprising situations may make this one of the most fascinating of the final few months of 2014.
Oscar Prospects:
None.
