Synopsis:

From IMDb: “The film follows events in the U.S. during a civil war. Government forces attack civilians. Journalists are shot in the Capitol.”

Review: (#1, C+) An interesting and effective design, though perhaps not one that will immediately appeal to passers-by.

(#2, C+) While this certainly has an epic feel, it also looks a bit derivative. The colors are nicely contrasting and the background doesn’t look as poorly implemented as a lot of recent posters do.

(#3, C) When war films start looking like disaster films, you have to question their output. (#4, C) This is a little more jarring than the prior design but also a bit more tepid in its color scheme.

Review: (#1, C) The concept is an interesting one, but there’s so little set-up that gives the audience an idea of what they are walking into. Sure, there’s conflict between battle ideals of Americanism, but without a foundation to support it, the whole doesn’t seem that appealing.

(#2, C) While the imagery is mostly new, the content isn’t more compelling than the prior trailer, which makes the viewer wonder if the film will be any good. Typically, Alex Garland’s movies look a lot more fascinating than this.

(#3, C) If you didn’t already know what the film was about, this trailer won’t explain it to you. Where there are some interesting sequences, it all feels a bit formulaic at this point.

Oscar Prospects:

Alex Garland started off well with Ex Machina becoming a surprising Oscar winner. His subsequent two films were completely ignored. This looks more mainstream than his prior two, so it could be a contender.
