Release Date:
March 28, 2014
Synopsis:
From IMDb: “A biography of the civil-rights activist and labor organizer Cesar Chavez.”
Poster: C-
Review: A glaring, boring affair. The solidarity motif is fitting, but overbearing. The bright colors might bring attention to the poster, but it seems otherwise so uneventful that it’s easy for the eye to slide back off of it without a second glance.
Trailer: B / A
Review: There are a lot of similarities between the two trailers. The first, which I saw in the theater originally, is conventional, unexciting and notable only for the inclusion of excellent actors. The second design adds a compelling dramatic underscore, sets the year-spanning struggle of Cesar Chavez into its proper historical place. Were you to watch the first, you might easily dismiss the film. If you watch the second, it makes the film more difficult to resist.
Oscar Prospects:
That pesky March release window is the only thing standing in front of me predicting this to be an Oscar contender. The story is dramatic and significant, making it Oscar baity. Yet, opening so early, while likely to appeal to Hispanic audiences, it will be easy to forget the film by the end of the year.
