Review: (#1, C) Like the trailer, the audience gets a tease of the villain, Red Hulk. The problem is its simplicity gets in its own way creating an unappealing design that won’t excite Marvel fans that much.

(#2, C) A pretty uninspired teaser. Red Hulk and the new Captain America with nothing particularly engaging about it, though scientifically fallible (how does someone hitting a shield produce sparks?). (#3, B) Captain America without the telltale red-white-and-blue color palette is a brave change of direction and the use of images here is strong. There’s an emptiness to the backdrop that exacerbates the harshness of the colors chosen but it stands out fairly well.

(#4, #8, #9, C+) These format-specific efforts have charm in ways but also feel a bit empty and underwhelming. (#5-#7, C) The remainder of these posters look cheap and unappealing. (#10, C+) There’s an attempt, even if a clumsy one, to create some energy to the design but that tree-lined street backdrop doesn’t say much about the film and that is a bit distracting.

(#11-#12, B+) These two Chinese-style designs pit our hero and the villain against one another. They are intriguingly crafted even if they have some strange dissonance between the background art style and the foreground. (#13, C+) A poorly split design that features all of the actors in unexceptional poses. It’s more interestingly detailed than some past efforts but feels surprisingly lifeless. (#14, B-) A unique effort that is perhaps too empty. Using the black-white-and-red color combo that is popular with action and horror films, but throwing in a touch of blue to at least link itself to film itself.

Trailer Rating: B- / C+ / C+

Review: (#1, B-) The plot of the film remains a bit amorphous after watching this trailer but there is some intriguing interplay between the new Captain America and the U.S. president that could link this more favorably to the best in the Captain America series of films, The Winter Soldier, than to any of the other Marvel films. That said, the alarming absence of the Winter Soldier himself is concerning.

(#2, C+) This close to a film’s release, you want to hit the ground running with your best trailer and this isn’t it. While it’s intended to play up the self-sacrificing nature of the character, it’s the background elements that are underwhelming. There’s little excitement and shoddy craftsmanship on display.

(#3, C+) The action is familiar, though the villainous element is given a bit more attention. Whether or not audiences will see either of the two prior trailers and not be convinced but suddenly decide to see the film after this one, it feels like wasted effort.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
