Release Date:

July 20, 2018

Synopsis:

From IMDb: “Collin (Daveed Diggs) must make it through his final three days of probation for a chance at a new beginning. He and his troublemaking childhood best friend, Miles (Rafael Casal), work as movers and are forced to watch their old neighborhood become a trendy spot in the rapidly gentrifying Bay Area. When a life-altering event causes Collin to miss his mandatory curfew, the two men struggle to maintain their friendship as the changing social landscape exposes their differences. Lifelong friends Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal co-wrote and star in this timely and wildly entertaining story about friendship and the intersection of race and class set against the backdrop of Oakland. Bursting with energy, style and humor, Blindspotting, boldly directed by Carlos Lรณpez Estrada in his feature film debut, is a provocative hometown love letter that glistens with humanity.”

Review: (#1) Trying to play off the drawings that contain two different images, this simplistic rendition of the concept is easy to spot both and that may be the intention, but the coloration just isn’t that exciting. (#2) Another attempt to mimic other designs, this one intermixes two figures, each torn from strips. It’s inadequately laid out and poorly overlaid, which makes it look a bit tacky. (#3-#4) This pair of character posters introduces our characters, but the backdrop and titling aren’t that impressive, nor are the central images.

(#5) A poster that seems indefinite and inconsequential. It has an interesting visual gimmick, but its purpose is difficult to understand. (#6) Even less consequential, this design has seemingly little purpose. (#7-#8) This pair of art pieces are visually interesting, but not incredibly enticing. (#9) This is a fascinating artistic interpretation of the relationship between these two men in the film. They are of the same body. It’s resonant, even if not particularly attractive. (#10) Trying to portray these critic quotes as graffiti is hamfisted and poorly handled.

Review: A straightforward, but only modestly inspiring trailer presents a premise that looks to be difficult to sit through, but may be ultimately rewarding.

Oscar Prospects:

It could be a minor player at the Oscars thanks to its positive word of mouth, but I suspect it might be isolated to screenwriting.
