Review: (#1, C) An uninspired start that touches on the film’s look at fame but doesn’t do enough to sell the film as an engaging adventure. (#2, C+) The Rolling Stone cover style is fitting but the overall look is a bit dull, lacking in action and excitement and won’t do much to move the needle of interest.

Trailer Rating: B / B-

Review: (#1, B) Many of the set pieces in the trailer are quite thrilling though the pomposity of Robbie Williams’ introduction and performance hinder the film’s accessibility. Fans of the artist (who’s seldom not had an album hit #1 in the UK) will surely turn up but there’s not enough here to reach out to non-fans.

(#2, B-) It’s inevitable that the viewer gets more of the background in a second trailer and while that might entice those who are looking for interesting music biopics, its confusing use of effects to make its star an ape doesn’t click the way it should, making this very much a movie for Robbie Williams fans only. That said, it might not even appeal to them since their icon’s actual face is never seen in the film.

Oscar Prospects:

If the film has an original song, I could see it contending there but not likely elsewhere.
