Review: (#1, C) A simple shot that tells you who the film’s about but nothing else and especially not with any sense of style. (#1, C+) This one does have style and is a fascinating use of black-on-dark gray; however, the accompanying image isn’t terribly exciting.
(#3, C) Not as interesting as the prior design, just a simplistic and uninspired choice. (#4, C+) With a little extra, the design pops a little more than the prior efforts but insufficiently so. (#5, B) A nice throwback design that reminds favorably of the same era Winehouse’s music evoked, which is a fitting design choice. (#6, C+) This also tries to reminder of a prior era but doesn’t have the visual balance or creative energy of the prior. (#7, C) Reminiscent of the poster design for Moon, which really doesn’t seem to fit this film even when the “moon” is a record. (#8, C) Black may be in the title but overuse of the color does not embellish. (#9, C+) A nice sideways image creates the disjointed feeling expected but it doesn’t have enough to it to feel intriguing. (#10, C-) The background is far too empty even with streaks. While that does make the foreground stick out, it doesn’t look very interesting.

Review: (#1, B) Using the down tempo versions of Amy Winehouse’s two big hits are a nice touch that enliven what otherwise looks like a familiar and well-worn biopic style. The drama is a bit dull, which might cause some pause when deciding whether or not to see it.
Oscar Prospects:
The May release indicates that the studio is going for box office rather than Oscar consideration. Always consider biopics even if this one isn’t going to make the Oscars.
