Review: (#1, C) The argyle of the title is obvious, but overbearing as is the pink lipstick and its shaded smoke trail. They are trying really hard to appeal with the cat, but with little success.
(#2, C) Avoiding the diamond pattern while exerting the diamond argyle pattern seems like a strange choice. The background of the first design wasn’t interesting and this is almost the same. The actors look like they are in differing states of interest in the film and that perhaps speaks volumes about it. (#3, C+) Not far removed from the prior. It highlights all the actors without making them look more enticing. (#4-#13, C) Continuing the prior pattern, these character posters are utterly uninteresting with the same tagline making each less interesting. No variance other than the central figure (that and a strange misalignment between posters with the center diamond off-center on most of them) makes for a rather dull collection. (#14, C-) Having just a close-up of the cat might have some appeal to cat lovers but will have zero appeal on moviegoers in general. (#15, C) The cat alone in a dull Dolby-specific design just accentuates the cheapness of this entire production’s advertising push.
Trailer Rating: C- / B-

Review: (#1, C-) The teaser introduces the characters and the cat, but doesn’t succeed in establishing sufficient expectations. It looks more like a dull Austin Powers rip-off than anything. (#2, B-) The second trailer has a lot more humor and action that makes the film seem more interesting, though it still doesn’t quite explain the aesthetic on display, which wants to be a pastiche of 1980s style than something that could appeal more broadly.
Oscar Prospects:
None.
