Review: (#1) If you’re a fan of the 1930 film and/or the novel, then you know this anti-war film has a lot of potential emotional impact and the trailer largely sets that kind of tone, which should provide most viewers hope. The problem is that the potential for pessimism for the material comes through a bit too strongly, which might turn away a lot of people who should see the film.
(#2) The continued selection of striking anti-war scenes helps elevate the trailer beyond the commonplace war film efforts. It still doesn’t quite convince the audience that this is one of the year’s must-see films, which is a drawback for this kind of movie.
Oscar Prospects:
The original film is one of the greatest Best Picture winners in Oscar history and the novel is considered a literary classic. The formula for Oscar competitiveness is there, but will this be the entry Netflix flogs above all others or will it be ignored? We will see how critics appreciate it first.
