Review: (#1, C+) It’s suggestive enough to make fans excited but it lacks depth or detail and running liquid down a string makes it look rather cheap.

(#2, C+) The face-hugger returns and we have yet another poster that means more to fans than non-fans. Still, this creates a bit more anxiety than the prior, so it’s probably a little more effective but that red tinge and backdrop diminish the end result.

(#3, C) The familiar alien of the franchise will always appeal to fans of the series but this design is relatively dull though the lighting is well handled. (#4, B-) While the design is relatively simplistic, it has sufficient detail to make it appealing without a lot of empty space. The colors don’t work terribly well together but overall, it’s a solid effort.

(#5-#7, C) These three format-specific designs are fairly generic compared to the remaining ones. They certainly speak to the theme of the film but that IMAX one is especially cheesy. (#8, B-) While the outside white elements are a bit overbearing, the interior elements are as Alien as you can get and that helps sell the film well. (#9, C+) Almost as cheesy as the IMAX design but at least it has a color scheme that sets it apart from all the others. (#10, C+) While it has a lot of neat, Alien-inspired detail, it’s also oppressively red in color, which is excessive. (#11, B-) Once again the overabundance of white is garish but the interior of the alien head populated with figures from the film makes it approachable to the audience while everyone expects them to die.

Trailer Rating: B / A / A

Review: (#1, B) Every time Ridley Scott has gone back to this universe that he helped launch, it’s been grandiose, oppressive, and often nonsensical. Going back to the original film’s claustrophobic horror roots might be just what the franchise needs to reset itself. This trailer does a solid job conveying that potential.

(#2, A) One of the things fans of this series have complained about is how far away from the original film and its first sequel the series has devolved. Those fans will not be disappointed in this spine-tingling, claustrophobic sci-fi horror film that looks to evoke the best aspects of the series while successfully creating tension within the viewer.

(#3, A) Another solid effort, explaining more of the plot to the audience while applying the horror and sci-fi elements franchise fans have come to expect. This is a sterling effort that has the right kind of energy to lead the film to success.

Oscar Prospects:

A craft contender for sure.
